Cultural Trust Distributes Funds for 2005:
Awards Cultural Development Grants
and Grants to Cultural Coalitions and Cultural Partners
On July 30, 2004, the Oregon Cultural Trust Board approved the distribution of $772,602 from the Trust fund for fiscal year 2005 and awarded grants in each of the Trust's three grant categories.
The Cultural Trust, an ambitious plan to raise new funds to preserve and strengthen Oregon's culture, the arts, heritage and the humanities, offers competitive Cultural Development Grants to cultural organizations, Cultural Participation Grants to recognized county and tribal cultural coalitions, and grants to Oregon's statewide cultural partner agencies.
"The Trust's 2005 grants are particularly significant since they mark the first time that Oregon's county and tribal cultural coalitions will make local investments in culture with funds from the Trust's Cultural Participation program. The $240,000 in this program will be re-granted to allow local historical societies, libraries and arts groups to take on projects that are local priorities," said Charlie Walker of Neskowin, Chairman of the Cultural Trust Board. "Every Oregon community has cultural assets, and the Trust is relying on the experience and knowledge of the new cultural coalitions to make grants in alignment with local cultural plans."
The Trust's competitive Cultural Development Grants provide state recognition and support to significant cultural programs and projects, preserving and enhancing Oregon's diverse arts, heritage and humanities efforts. In response to a call for applications, the Trust received 95 proposals requesting over $1.7 million. Grants totaling $240,100 were awarded to 25 organizations to support projects that increase opportunities for Oregonians to participate in culture or which preserve cultural assets.
"Oregon culture plays an integral part in economic revitalization and in maintaining quality of life. Through historic preservation, cultural tourism or civic engagement, cultural activity enlivens our neighborhoods and develops community," said Christine D'Arcy, executive director of the Oregon Arts Commission and of the Cultural Trust. "The Cultural Trust was created to help every community invest in culture and the 2005 grants will do just that."
The Cultural Trust also awarded grants totaling $240,000 to Oregon's statewide cultural partner agencies, the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Council for the Humanities, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Historical Society and the State Historic Preservation Office. A portion of the allocated funds is reserved for collaborative projects undertaken by these statewide partners, leveraging the Trust's support for broader reach across Oregon.
